City of London – Speaking English with Confidence

What the City of London Corporation were looking for

The Department of Children & Community Services at the City of London were looking for a website for the exciting launch of their ‘Speaking English with Confidence’ project, a London-wide network of English conversation clubs.

They needed something which would help them provide promotional information about the project, resources for individual clubs and also offer an easy-to-use map-based search facility for people to find clubs in their area. It all needed to be stylish but also thoroughly modern & usable on the move on mobile or tablet devices.

What we did

We were brought in to provide all web development and ‘front end’ implementation of the project design work. We guided our design partner for the project in implementing a ‘Responsive’ design & the alternative layouts & views required for a range of different content layouts involved, and fully developed the solution in line with these (including, of course, cross-browser and cross-device testing).

It was a project well suited to the Content Management System ‘WordPress’, which we specialise in, so the related technologies and code underpin the site (PHP, JavaScript & JQuery, HTML5, CSS3 etc.)

As well as the custom developed search and listings functionality, with a simple process for new SpEC clubs to be added, the site also features a simple way for case studies, picture galleries and video galleries to be added and clear sections for visitors to find these. The galleries are configured to work with the ‘Responsive’ design layout so they resize to mobile devices as required.

The ‘Toolkit’ resource section was also set up to enable the gathering (& simple export) of valuable questionnaire data on the types of people using the resource.

The outcome:

SpEC launched as scheduled and we’re pleased that the website is playing a key role in helping it go from strength to strength with more and more clubs being added and people engaging with the project. In the words of Joella, their project lead:

“The SpEC project has been progressing well since we started up and the website is now full of SpEC clubs. Thanks ever so much for your help with the website!”

We were more than happy to help!
